The best schiacciata in Tuscany

July the 4th, 2025 | A city like Florence, even if so fascinating, can be very chaotic and crowded in any season, so how about escaping the city to pursue the best Tuscan schiacciata?

In less than an hour from Florence and Poggiopiano, you can reach Consuma, a picturesque locality at 1,000 metres above sea level surrounded by lush woods, where you can organize hikes and pic-nics. Situated on the border between the provinces of Florence and Arezzo, Consuma is the ideal place for a getaway in search of cooler temperatures in summer or a bit of snow in winter, and savour one of the best Tuscan specialities:

the schiacciata!

The typical Consuma schiacciata is stuffed with prosciutto and pecorino cheese, but the real speciality is the schiacciata with porcini mushrooms, fresh and local during mushroom season being Consuma a mountain village.

Consuma boasts no less than three different places renowned for their schiacciata, each of which – of course! – claims the title of “best in the area”, but there is only one way to find out which is the best Tuscan schiacciata: TASTE THEM ALL!
Here’s an overview of the “must-try” schiacciata (we’ll also reveal our favourite one!):

Chalet il Valico

Located in Montemignaio, known as the “Christmas tree village”. It is the most reviewed place on Google, famous for its constant queue. If you like your schiacciata nice and crunchy, this place and its secret recipe are for you!

Bar Carletti

A grocery store that offers schiacciate that look like pizza, with a soft base and a slightly crispy surface. Here, you can choose from ready-made schiacciatas – the one with onions or mushrooms are the best! – or compose your own favourite version.

Consumi

A historic restaurant, frequented since the 1980s and the favourite destination for drivers and motorcyclists. As it also has two large indoor rooms, it is ideal for a stop-off on less hospitable days for an open-air picnic. It competes with the Chalet for supremacy but Consumi is definetely our favourite! If you are intrigued by well-seasoned schiacciata with surprising combinations, this is the right place.

Not just schiacciata…

Consuma is not only famous for its delicious schiacciata, but is also the ideal starting point for fascinating summer and winter hikes in the Casentino Park. Among the many routes, a scenic trail takes about 6 hours to walk. Here is the detailed route.

For the less trained, Stia can be reached by car from Consuma, driving along the scenic Casentino roads. Stia is a picturesque town famous for its fine cloth, with its unmistakable characteristics, has made Stia famous throughout the region.

To immerse yourself in the beauty of Consuma and enjoy the best Tuscan schiacciata, it only takes 45 minutes from Agriturismo Poggiopiano by car or by bus, with the SI90 line from Girone village.
Agriturismo Poggiopiano is the ideal base for those who don’t want to miss a single bit of Tuscany, exploring every corner from the city to the mountains! Have a look at our rooms for your next holiday HERE.
