Santa Brigida: between festivals, legends and hikes

Santa Brigida is also a beautiful destination for a hike to discover the legends and traditions that this small village hides.

Once in the village, along the Via Piana (“Piana street”), you will find the church of Santa Brigida of Ireland, which rises on the cave of Santa Brigida. According to legend, around the 10th century, Brigida reached this place to stay with her brother Andrea, at the time Archdeacon of the bishop of Fiesole. In this cave, Brigida decided to spend her life as a hermit, eating only seeds, roots and field herbs.

Sentiero delle Burraie (“Butter mills trail”)

Taking Via del Cimitero (“Cemetery street”), you reach a beautiful chestnut grove where you take the trail of Sentiero delle burraie (HERE on Google Maps). This ancient small buildings dug in the slope, dating back to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, allowed the conservation of dairy products.

Water was collected in stone basins used for the storage of food. Some of the burraie are still accessible and it is really worth a visit to these natural fridges from the past!

Santa Brigida protected natural area

In this same Natural Area, which extends for 800 hectares, there is also the Sanctuary of Madonna delle Grazie al Sasso. This building is dating back to 1490 and located on the slopes of Monte Romito at 565 m asl.

The sanctuary is located on one of the many trails of the Sentiero delle Burraie but also accessible from the village through a path that in its last stretch is characterized by fifteen precious bronze stations of the “Via Crucis – Via Lucis“.

Not to be missed the view from the portico of the church, as well as the board of the Ceraiolo dating back to the fifteenth century and the neoclassical frescoes of the two oratories. The lower oratory hosts the table Madonna with Child and Saints John the Baptist and Leonardo (dating back to the fifteenth century) by Giovanni Benindenti, known as the “Ceraiolo”.

Santa Brigida with its festivals, legends and trekking immersed in magnificent landscapes, is easily reachable by car in less than half an hour, and in about 40 minutes by bus n 330A from Girone village, just 600 meters from Agriturismo Poggiopiano!
